Wild Life and us

By Tamo Dada

Recently a close friend of mine came to me teary eyed and said “It’s all over". He told me that his girl friend has broken their 10 years long relationship because she got bored.

As a Wildlife Biologist, it made me wonder, do wild animals too have emotions? Do they know what emotions are?

The dictionary defines the word Emotion as “a moving of the mind or soul: excitement of the feelings, whether pleasing or painful; disturbance or agitation of mind caused by a specific exciting".

If you note the key words of the definition of word Emotion, it says excitement, painful, disturbance, agitation. Surely every pet owners especially those having dogs know the meaning of these words which is often exhibited by their pets, more so when they meet after a day long absence. Dogs greet their owners by waging their tail accompanied with low sharp barks or by jumping in the mid-air showing their excitement. Boy! Animals really know how to show their excitements. They do have emotions.

As 1 am writing this, 1 still remember the innocent and amazed took of a young female barking deer deep inside Pakke Tiger Reserve one fine morning, on 24 October 2003. I was all alone early in the morning walking along the forest trails looking at marvelous beautiful varied forest birds. There were black bulbuls with their large flocks calling each other along with few species of warblers and forest tailorbirds jumping playfully all over the trees and bushes. I could distinctly hear the calls of red jungle fowl and the distinct loud hmmp calls of large imperial doves. Within this busy wild supermarket a moment behind the bushes caught my attention. As I peered through the bushes, I saw a pair of eyes also peering towards me. The eyes were benevolent and pleasant to look; it was bright and beautiful as it emerged from the bushes. It was a female barking deer, few feet away from me. 1 Could sense that she was looking at the first human being of her life. Oh! What a look of amazement she had! She was tilting her head from left to right and from right to left as if prospective Hindi movie bridegroom was looking slyly at his would be bride. Frankly, like the proverbial bride, I too stared at her, marveling at her innocence, the purity of love, away from violence, politics and heartbreaks. She stood there as utopian of love and innocence. How true when one see teenagers madly in love walking hand in hand in Akash Deep complex not knowing the kinds of heartbreaks the life will bring.

Like every caring human parents I dream and pursue to conserve, preserve and provide the best of environment where many more wild animals can maintain their innocence and prosper.

As every loving human parent, I too grieve to see the beautiful, innocent dead wild animals adoring our market places and our attires. Just imagine, how you would feel, when someone is after your beautiful daughters and sons to kill them just because they have beautiful skin, hair and teeth. So as to show their bravado or just for time pass. Oh! Come on man! You cannot kill a life to kill your boredom or so that you can use the dead animal's parts as fashion statement or maintain your frivolous traditions when you have embraced every statement of the modern western world.

This I say to my heartbroken friend, learn from the animals, what is love!  Learn from the lions, how to maintain a relationship. Learn from the wild animals what you mean by being innocent and learn from them how to live in a cosmopolitan society.

Love wildlife and learn to live like humans. (The author is the first trained Wildlife Biologist from Arunachal Pradesh. He could be contacted at tamodadda@gmail.com)

The price of the uniform

Kamin Borang

It is not a depiction, it is a prophecy the days are not far when we will witness many Tirap & Changlang, many Manipur (Ethnic war, inter-tribe & intra¬tribe clash, insurgency & killing), many Gorkha Land (VI Scheduled, autonomy, state), many Jharkhand (eco-disparity, against capitalist, Zaminders, rich, land acquisition & alienation & casteism). many Chattisgarh (for tribal land and forest right, against the exploitation from outsiders & capitalist in the name of industrialization & development with false promise of compensation and rehabilitation) in Arunachal Pradesh.

Arise! Awake!! It is not yet late to prepare ourselves.

Ask those who are beneath the bunker, suffocating, peep the enemies, who are on the top of glacier patrols for days, who in the dense forest engulfed by leaches and mosquitoes battled their life from the bullets of militants & insurgents.

Ask those who are awake in the odd hours, starving for days, swollen and sunken eyes for lack of sleep, in the soaring heat and biting cold, still with a smile on the face crossing every obstacles just to see you smile, feel comfortable and secured.

Ask those who have escaped the death from near inch, who have felt and experienced the intensity of IED blast, who have seen and gathered the pieces of human flesh splitting around for martyr pyre, who have dribbled from the spray of bullets launched by militants hiding.

Once while attending Service Selection Board (CDSE-99) at Cariappa Duar (Allahabad), Eastern Zone Selection Centre, the secretary of selection board (Brigadier) delivered a speech during the last stage of selection process - stating that they don't look for intellectual who can became a good scientist, scholars and IAS officer. They don't look for good orator and artist who can became  renowned politicians and actor, but they look for those cadres who have in them officer like qualities.

There was a time where "Police Force" means a dumping ground for all those naughty and defaulters youth of the villages, but time changed, situation demanded for selection of the best.

Therefore, request the concern department to recruit and appoint the best of the best in the ensuing mass police recruitment drive, to maintain the dignity of uniform, retain the honour and prepare for the days ahead.

If there can be a special recruitment drive for NCC-'C' certificate holders for appointment of commission officers in defense services, reservation for ex-serviceman and serving force personal in SSC and other selection board, why not APPSC for APS (Dy. SP) reserve certain post for those defense force & police personnel who despite several untold ordeal still manage to crack the mains, who with their vast valuable experiences and deep knowledge can enhance the process of policing.

There are many occasion and certain situation where field and tactical experiences matter more than just dormant and decaying knowledge erupting from sofa, safari and Air Conditioned cabins.

"Remember coward dies many times before death but bravest of the brave dies only a single time in his life span that also with a mark of honour in his coffin'.

So, uniform means not for fashion but a passion with definite goal and objective. Uniform is the protector of the nation, therefore third pillar of the nation. Uniform is the ozone layer of the public, need to be preserved.

Uniform is the umbrella of the rightful citizen, need to be frame well. The values & price it carries is next only to god and your mortal life.

Between Dams and Dustbin, what we need more is dustbins!

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to share some of my feelings. My amateur feeling goes like this. I am a very common subject of the very special (Apple) state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Whenever I pick up this or any other daily there is always news about cleaning up of a town, social services being conducted and other philanthropic works as such.

With highest regards to people who are involved in such activities, i feel very sorry for them as these people with all their heart want to keep our very special state clean but they will never succeed in it because we the Arunachalees are all deeply rotten.

how much ever we are cleaned up on the surface it still stink of all the ill and unwanted traits of a state.

There was a huge news as the public information office being given the RTI award. But I wonder if the RTIs did actually helped anyone?

There was huge hue and cry that since RTI act has been enacted there will be justice and fair play in every field, mostly in employment but i dont need to say anything on this as everyone knows how things work.

Then there were this so called democratic elections...a farce I say but in here i don’t have anything against the candidates, most of whom spent lakhs and lakhs of rupees.

It is the people who compelled them to do so. What can these poor political aspirants do when every damn person asks Rs 5000 or more for single vote?

After already spending so much money in the elections no rational person would even think spending an extra penny on developmental activities.

I know most of the people must be getting furious and as a very common argument they would simply say, "humko vaise bhi kuch nahi milta toh kyon na paise lele". But this way the vicious circle will never ever end and we will soon be doomed.

We can for once sacrifice our personal benefits and think of future and for all.

There won’t be a single mango man in the state who don’t grumble over the conditions of their town or colony or village but nobody dare to challenge the system as we all are immune to bad infrastructure and backwardness.

It is synonymous to the reason why India did not get effected badly by the global recession, “because our living standards is already so low that it cannot be lowered down any further". So state of our state is so distorted that there is hardly any scope left for any more distortion.

I might sound a hypocrite pointing fingers at others and doing nothing myself but as mentioned already I am a mango man. I am like everyone rotten and a hypocrite.

Ban Chinese products they say, will it help?

When you all take pride in going to the "complex' for every damn thing?

Why not transfer the energy and aggression to constructive works as opening up a special cell in the union to see that the RTI is actually utilized, or file PILs as most of the members in any unions are law students it will fetch some experience for the future judiciary of the state.

Dams and dams everywhere which is threatening every aspect of life for whom it is supposed to be made. Instead why not construct dustbins everywhere which will be more beneficial right now for everyone and make sure that it is maintained properly because there are some places like Daporijo where dustbins are cause of inconvenience and diseases as they are never ever cleared!

Now many might think that I started with the thought that cleaning the surface is not helpful and why am I stuck on petty issue as dustbin. This is to justify my argument that between Dams and Dustbin what we need more is dustbins!

This much for today. I will keep writing till I rot completely and decompose.

 Yours,

Aam Aadmi (on E-mail)

Flexibility is no good for APPSC

Dear Editor,

Through the esteemed columns of your daily, I take the privilege to draw your kind attention towards the recent issue of `Re-consideration Theory' of the rejected candidates, which we do not subscribe to.

If at every stage of the examination, reconsideration is done, we expect the commission to carry on with this process after the preliminary and Main exam too. As it is known to all that the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission is an autonomous and an advisory body, but in Arunachal Pradesh, it is governed and dictated by the various interest groups. It is the most flexible commission despite its tall claim of its status and position but they do not have a stand against the confronting situations created by certain pressure groups even though their demands may not be genuine.

The reconsideration of date and reconsideration of rejected list of candidate shows the instability of the commission. This is very much evident that the commission is lacking in executing its discretionary power and tend to bend towards the direction of pressure given. It is truly said by some bygone leaders of our State that `Arunachal Pradesh is a land of kushi-kushi ‘ Now  it has been very much proved to the commission in its true term.

The rules and instructions to fill up the form were provided to every individual along with the form. So where does the question of minor mistake arise here?

The minimum eligibility for appearing in this exam is graduation. Such silly mistake from a graduate and an educated person is not expected. APPSCCE is the mother of all examination in the state. How could someone aspiring for such a prestigious exam be so irresponsible? The filling up of form is the first step towards achieving the goal. When a person could be so reckless in his or her first move, what could the State anticipate from such person in the future?

There are about 8000 candidates who have been selected, filled up their forms properly and many in this category have filled the forms more than once to avoid being rejected. Had it been made clear in the beginning that rejected candidates would be reconsidered, there would not have been a matter of concern regarding the filling of form.  Everyone is aware of the fact that scrutiny and rejection are a part and parcel of every examination.  Therefore, such demand for reconsideration should not be deliberately made and at the same time entertained by the Commission.

It is our genuine feeling that no individual has the right to challenge the integrity of the Commission and impose their decision for their own benefits. Man by nature is a social being with unlimited wishes and desires. If the Commission goes to fulfill the desires of every individual, where would its own identity go? If the Commission is to be ruled by many minds, let it be run by the public and pressure groups as such.

No doubt, India is a democratic country where every individual has the right to express his or her feelings and sentiments. Likewise, everyone is given the opportunity to avail the form but it is completely the fault on the part of the rejected candidate who did not make the best out of it. Nevertheless, this right should not be taken for granted and exercised in a wrong way. The Commission should maintain its standard and the candidates aspiring for such prestigious post should abide by the rules and regulations prescribed by the Commission other than the unfair means of selecting the candidates.

Yours,

Miss Vanessa Borang

AASA need to be appreciated and emulated

Dear Editor,

I went through the headline- A garbage bin with a difference! of Dec 4 edition of your yours esteemed daily. The steps taken up by Action Aid Society Arunachal (AASA) really need to be appreciated for their hygienic and eco-friendly deeds. Such ideas always need to be encouraged by our Govt. and other NGOs in state like Arunachal, which houses biological hotspots, and where every steps and deeds have to be eco-friendly.

Now what state needs is a good plan for proper and hygienic disposal of both the waste were non-degradable are recycled, degradable  further used for production of household gas and manure. For this, what can be better than a 'Biogas plant'? If state does not have it, well state must plan for it and if state has it, state should plan more of it for the better usage of wastes. This will be in the  interest of the state in the field of cleanliness and growth in economy.

Yours,

Hage Rambo
